| | Sophie Zeldin-O'Neill | 1 August 2024 | | | Good morning. Last night, a 17-year-old was charged with three counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder after three girls aged six, seven, and nine were killed at a dance class in Southport on Monday. Elsewhere, a major new report has shown that treating failing eyesight and high cholesterol could lower the risk of dementia, and analysts say a decision to cut interest rates later today is "on a knife-edge". There are also shoots of hope for the Sycamore Gap tree, as experts confirm they have seen signs of life growing from its stump. | | | | | |
| Image: Family Pictures | 17-year-old charged with murder over Southport attack | | A 17-year-old has been charged with murder and attempted murder after three children were killed at a dance class in Southport. The teenager, who cannot be named because of his age, has been charged with three counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder. Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar died after the attack at the Taylor Swift-themed class in the Merseyside town on Monday. Eight other children and two adults who were at the event in the Hart Space community centre were also injured, with several still in a critical condition. The accused will appear at Liverpool City Magistrates’ Court this morning. Ursula Doyle, deputy chief crown prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service Mersey-Cheshire, said: "We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial." | | | | More than 100 arrests in London protest after Southport attack | | | | | |
Which taxes might Rachel Reeves raise? | The government has said it will have to increase taxes at the Budget in October to plug a £22bn "hole" in the public finances. But Chancellor Rachel Reeves has ruled out raising taxes on working people including VAT (value added tax), income tax and National Insurance. So which taxes might go up? See what our experts think.
Two new dementia risks identified by major report | | Treating failing eyesight and high cholesterol are two new ways to lower the risk of dementia developing, a major report suggests. Scientists have now identified 14 health issues which, if reduced or eliminated, could theoretically prevent nearly half of dementias in the world. Middle-aged people and poorer countries have most to gain from targeting these risk factors, says the Lancet Commission's latest report on the topic. | | | | UK interest rate decision on a knife-edge | | A decision by the Bank of England to cut interest rates later today is "on a knife-edge", according to analysts. Traders have bet on a 60% chance that the UK's central bank will lower rates from 5.25% to 5%, but others believe another hold is on the cards. Borrowing costs are currently at a 16-year high, putting pressure on household finances, although returns on savings are also greater.

| Eight new shoots have emerged from the base of the felled Sycamore Gap tree, giving hope the historic tree lives on ten months after it was cut down . The tree stood in a dip in Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland and there was a national outcry when it was attacked with a chainsaw in September last year. The National Trust hopes the shoots could develop to form new trees around the stump. | | Thanks to those who have given us feedback on News Daily.
