| | Iain McDowell | 1 July 2024 | | | Good morning. France's far right has achieved something it has never done before in modern times in the country's election - we have the latest from Paris. Energy prices are falling for most UK households but will it last? We'll also marvel at Jude Bellingham's moment of magic and give you for a rare look inside Balmoral Castle. | | | | | |
| Image: EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock | Le Pen's National Rally in pole position in French election | | For years, France's National Rally has challenged the establishment without ever breaking into the mainstream. But Marine Le Pen's party has worked hard to shed its extremist image and now stands "at the gates of power", as the country's prime minister put it, after emerging from the first round of the snap election in a comfortable first place, with over a third of the vote. Our Paris correspondent Hugh Schofield says it's now indisputably the dominant political force in France but all is still to play for. That's because it's not clear whether the National Rally can win a clear majority and form a government. There'll be frantic days of campaigning and deal-making ahead of the second round next weekend as politicians from the centre and the left try to unite to keep the hard right out of power. If that happens, months of political deadlock may lie ahead. | | | | Explained: How France's election works | | | | | |
ANYONE FOR TENNIS? | Strawberries at the ready because Wimbledon begins this morning. Men's champion Carlos Alcaraz plays the first Centre Court match at 13:30 BST, with Britain's Emma Raducanu making her return straight after that. Find out how to follow it all on the BBC and here are five storylines to keep an eye on over the next fortnight.
Energy prices fall but relief for households may be temporary | | Energy bills are dropping from today in England, Scotland and Wales as a result of the lower price cap set by the regulator Ofgem. These new, lower rates aren't expected to last though. Industry analysts are forecasting a rise before winter that would more than reverse this latest drop. Prices for gas and electricity are considerably lower than the peak after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But Kevin Peachey, our cost-of-living correspondent, points out that a typical bill is still £400 higher than in 2021. | | | | | Parties make final push to win over undecided voters | | As election week begins, the parties are cranking up the campaigning in the final push for support ahead of polling day on Thursday. Labour says voters should choose them to avoid what they're calling five more years of chaos under the Conservatives. The Tories, who remain behind in the polls, say voters shouldn't hand Labour a large majority. We'll have coverage of all the twists, turns and analysis on our live page.
