Image: PA Media Mother and girls among nine hurt in 'corrosive substance' attack Witnesses have described a "horrific" scene after a mother and her two girls were doused in their car with a "corrosive substance" in Clapham, south London. The family, three responding police officers and two others who tried to help were taken to hospital after the attack on Wednesday evening, and police are currently searching for the suspect. One witness told the BBC the mother cried: "I can't see, I can't see" as he tried to help. "It was quite horrific," he added. Marina Ahmad, Labour London Assembly Member for Lambeth and Southwark, said a man had assaulted occupants in a car. Those who tried to help were also affected by the substance, describing a "burning sensation". Eight people were taken to hospital - five to a major trauma centre, and three to a local hospital. A joint statement by local Clapham Common councillors Alison Inglis-Jones and Ben Curtis said they and the wider community were "in total disbelief and shock".

The Commons Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Committee has said the government must plug a £4bn funding gap to avoid a "severe impact" on services and called for council tax to be reformed, describing the current system as "outdated" and "regressive". Labour MP Clive Betts, who chairs the committee, said: "If the government fails to plug this gap, well-run councils could face the very real prospect of effectively going bust."
Legal scammer cost vulnerable clients thousands A BBC investigation has revealed a legal scam which targeted dozens of vulnerable people.
