| | Stuart Duggan 1 August 2023 | | Good morning. Our top story today is about the people who want to buy a home but are stuck, despite earning enough to save for a deposit and pay monthly payments. We've also got news on why your favourite alcoholic drink is probably changing in price, a close look at heat pumps, and which area of the UK is using drones to help deliver the post. | | | |
'Invisible' renters shut out from affordable housing People like Sam, pictured above, are stuck in a paradox - they pay high private rents each month but don't qualify for so-called affordable housing schemes. Sam recently missed out on a housing association property because of his "low income" but was also told money he'd saved for a deposit counted against him. Sam is among the renters with incomes of more than £30,000 who are being excluded from affordable housing even though they can afford to pay the rent, and many adverts do not list a minimum income level. The chair of Parliament’s housing committee says the regulator needs to investigate how tenants are chosen. The government says affordable housing is for people “on limited incomes”.

Same Moscow skyscraper hit in new drone attack A skyscraper in Moscow has been hit again by a drone, according to the mayor of the Russian capital. Sergei Sobyanin says several drones were shot down overnight, but "one flew into the same tower at the Moskva City complex" that was targeted on Sunday. No injuries have been reported. Russia blamed Ukraine for the latest attack, and while Kyiv has not claimed any responsibility, President Zelensky has said attacks on Russia are an "inevitable, natural and absolutely fair process". | | | | | | Alcohol prices changing due to new tax system The way in which alcoholic drinks are taxed is changing from today. Booze will be taxed according to a drink's strength, meaning most wines and spirits will increase in price, but some sparkling wines will become cheaper. Take a look at our visual guide to the cost changes to various drinks to find out more. | | | | Essential read | | | Our climate editor examines the challenge of heating the UK's homes but not the planet. | | | | | | | | Image: Royal Mail UK's first drone mail service begins in Orkney The sight of drones flying around the Orkney islands will be common in the coming weeks as the flying robots are used to help deliver post. They're not taking letters and parcels to homes, but to the islands of Graemsay and Hoy where posties will complete the deliveries. The service is expected to improve reliability, delivery times and safety in remote areas.
