| | | | | Sophie Zeldin-O'Neill | | 10 December 2024 | | | | Good morning. The future of Syria is hanging in the balance after an insurgency led by the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) overthrew the Assad government on Sunday, with celebrations tempered by fears a power vacuum could plunge the country into violent chaos. Our international editor Jeremy Bowen gives his take on how we got here, and what might be next for the country. Elsewhere, police have charged a man with murder over last week's fatal shooting of a healthcare boss in New York, and we'll get the latest on a new agreement aiming to tackle migrant Channel crossings. | | | | | | |
| | Shaken by Assad's sudden fall, Syria's future feels far from certain | | | | Many Syrians are rejoicing after rebels toppled Assad's longstanding rule. Image: EPA | | Much has happened in the two days since former Syrian President Assad's regime was overthrown on Sunday. Many civilians hoping for news of their relatives have flocked to Saydnaya , a prison where Assad's opponents have long been detained, tortured and executed. Overhead, Israeli warplanes have launched dozens of attacks in a bid, Israel says, to stop weapons falling "into the hands of extremists". Meanwhile, a number of European countries, including the UK, have suspended the processing of asylum applications for Syrians, potentially leaving thousands in limbo. Our international editor Jeremy Bowen says the best scenario Syrians can hope for is that their country will "find a way to create a post-war mood of reconciliation, rather than a wave of looting and revenge". | | | | | | | | | | | | |
Luigi Mangione charged with murdering healthcare CEO in New York | | | Luigi Mangione, 26, has been charged with murder - and four other counts including firearms charges - over the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York last Wednesday. Mangione was taken into custody at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania yesterday after a customer recognised him. Police said he was found in possession of a 3D-printed gun and a handwritten document that indicated "motivation and mindset". | | | | | Germany to tighten people-smuggling law in UK deal | | | Germany has pledged to make it a clear criminal offence to smuggle migrants to the UK. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the "ground-breaking" new agreement would help tackle the criminal gangs organising small boat crossings across the Channel. It comes as the Border Security Command warns the crossings "are the most dangerous they have ever been". Read more. | | | | | | |

| | | | 'Mama wore crown at my bath time', says King | | | | The King said: "You have to get used to how heavy [the crown] is." Image: Getty images | | King Charles was only four years old at the time of the late Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation in 1953, but has said many of his recollections from the time are still vivid - including a memory of his mother practicing wearing her crown when she was bathing him as a child. The King made the comments in a new documentary which tells the stories of 50 women who attended the historic ceremony. | | | | | | | | |
