| | Starmer tells BBC: 'No plan for more tax rises' | | | | Starmer said: "I'll be judged, quite rightly, at the end of the parliamentary term whether I've delivered on what I said I would deliver on." Image: BBC | | After announcing his "plan for change" and the six Labour "milestones" against which he wants his government to be measured, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has told BBC Breakfast it is not his "plan" to have any more tax rises before the next election. With a near-£70bn increase in public spending having been announced in his party's first Budget last month, Starmer said: "I don't want to suggest we're going to keep coming back for more, because that isn't the plan", but conceded he could not rule out "unforeseen" circumstances. In addition to promising an end to hospital backlogs, Starmer has vowed to put more money in the pockets of working people, and dismissed claims by the opposition that this speech was a 'reset' following Labour's first months in power. | | | | | | | | | | |
Families of disgraced child surgeon hit out at 'whitewash' | | | The families of children operated on by disgraced surgeon Yaser Jabbar have criticised reports into their care, telling the BBC that Great Ormond Street Hospital has "failed their children". Jabbar carried out procedures including leg lengthening and straightening, and some cases linked to him resulted in harm, including life-long injuries and amputation. A spokesperson said the hospital is deeply sorry, and the independent review of patient care is in line with NHS guidelines. The BBC has spoken to some of the families involved. | | | | | Unions pressure ministers to increase workers' sick pay | | | Twenty-four union leaders have written to Keir Starmer to express concern that Labour's manifesto commitment to "strengthen" sick pay isn't being honoured - and call for the issue to be addressed in the Employment Rights Bill currently going through Parliament. They warn that some ill workers are delaying medical treatment as a result of inadequate sick pay legislation, but business leaders have concerns. Read more. | | | | | | |
