The french government is facing a historic crisis after opposition parties ousted prime minister Michel Barnier in a no-confidence vote on Wednesday. | | Fresh crisis for France as PM Barnier is ousted in vote of no confidence | | | | Barnier is likely to stay on as caretaker prime minister while Macron chooses a successor. Image: Reuters | | The French government has collapsed after Prime Minister Michel Barnier was ousted in a no-confidence vote on Wednesday evening, becoming the shortest-serving French prime minister in modern history. MPs voted overwhelmingly in support of the motion against him - just three months after his appointment by President Macron. Opposition parties had tabled the motion to remove him after he controversially used special powers to force through his budget without a vote. It is the first time the country's government has collapsed in a no-confidence vote since 1962, and is likely to further France's current political instability. Barnier is now obliged to present the resignation of his government, and the budget which triggered his downfall is now defunct.
Is Starmer speech a 'plan for change' or 'emergency relaunch'? | | | Keir Starmer's "plan for change" will be revealed later today, in a wide-ranging speech which the BBC''s political editor Chris Mason says is set to include six 'milestones' for England, and a deadline - the next general election. So what do insiders say about about the prospect of this being seen by critics as a 're-launch'? | | | | | What a new photo reveals about the gunman in CEO Brian Thompson killing | | | On Wednesday morning, UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson was fatally shot in the back outside the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan. The attacker fled the scene without taking any of Thompson's belongings, and police believe he was targeted in a pre-planned killing. Now, officers are using facial recognition technology and a discarded cell phone to identify his killer.

Elsewhere, the Times reports Emmanuel Macron is facing calls to resign the presidency over the collapse of France's government, and the Daily Mail examines a defence minister's acknowledgement that the entire British army would likely be wiped out within a year of being at war.
