| | | | | Sophie Zeldin-O'Neill | | 9 December 2024 | | | | Good morning. It has been just over a day since the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, after rebel forces took control of the country's capital, Damascus, and declared the government had fallen. We bring you the latest updates. Elsewhere, Donald Trump has said he will look at pardons for those involved in the 2021 US Capitol riot on his first day back in office next month, and chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to call for closer UK-EU ties, in the first address by a British chancellor to the Eurogroup since Brexit. | | | | | | |
| | World leaders seek stability in Syria after Assad overthrow | | | | Syrian people and rebels celebrate in the streets of Homs, Syria, on Sunday. Image: EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock | | After an extraordinary 24 hours, rebel group HTS swept into Syria's capital Damascus this weekend, claimed the city, and overthrew longstanding president Bashar al-Assad's regime. Russian news agencies have reported that Assad and his family have fled to Moscow and been granted asylum. Around the world, Syrian communities have been celebrating, and many gathered in Syria's central Umayyad Square, overcome by the extraordinary end to more than five decades of authoritarian rule, to listen to rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani speak. Meanwhile, the rebels have begun releasing inmates from Syria's jails, amid reports people are being detained in underground cells at the notorious Saydnaya prison. Now, the international community is watching closely, and hoping that stability can be preserved in the country. | | | | | | | | | | | | |
Trump vows to end birthright citizenship and pardon US Capitol rioters | | | In an NBC interview aired yesterday, President-elect Donald Trump vowed to end so-called birthright citizenship, which entitles anyone born in the US to an American passport, even if their parents were born elsewhere. He also promised to "look at the independent cases" of those involved in the Capitol riots. Trump has said these are just two of "a lot" of executive orders he will issue "quickly" after his January inauguration. | | | | | Closer UK and EU ties will boost growth, says Reeves | | | Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to propose Britain and the EU build a "mature, business-like relationship" and "break down barriers to trade" when she speaks at the Eurogroup finance ministers meeting in Brussels today. She is expected to emphasise that such a move will "improve both our growth prospects". Read more. | | | | | | |

| | BBC SOUNDS | | | | The broadcaster was the first black woman to play for England, and part of the team which won the Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2009. | | | | | | BBC NEWS | | | | After decades in power, Syria's President Bashar al-Assad was toppled with surprising speed. Hours later, he reportedly left on a plane. | | | | | | |
| | | | Most of today's papers lead with the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad following an armed rebellion against his 24-year rule. The Guardian reflects on "celebrations across Syria" and The Daily Express reports that thousands of Syrians took to the streets chanting "Assad is gone" - but the Daily Mail asks "Is worse to come?", quoting US President Joe Biden, who has called the toppling of the Assad regime "a moment of risk and uncertainty". | | | | | | | | |
| | | | Is Britain's love for tea cooling off? | | | | A recent survey by Mintel suggested less than half the nation, 48%, now drink tea at least once a day. Image: Getty images | | Last week, one of Britain’s oldest tea firms, Typhoo Tea - established 120 years ago - collapsed after a drop in sales, and was bought by vape maker Supreme. The news came as analysts reported UK tea sales have fallen by 4.3% in the last two years. Will cost hikes and competition from other beverages stir up trouble for Britain's beloved cuppa? | | | | | | | | |
