| Commons to vote on assisted dying | | | Emotions are running high ahead of today's Commons debate. Credit: EPA | It's been described by some MPs as the hardest decision of their careers. The vote on allowing assisted dying in certain circumstances is a highly sensitive one that has split Parliament. Kim Leadbeater, the Labour MP proposing the law, hopes it will "correct injustice and reduce human suffering". Opponents fear it could pressurise some vulnerable people into ending their lives early. We've spoken to four people about why this historic vote matters to them. The debate begins at 09:30 GMT and MPs are being allowed to vote freely according to their consciences. But despite weeks of intense lobbying, it's thought that dozens have yet to make up their minds. | | | | | | | | |

His lawyers say the claims are entirely false. | | | | Transport Secretary Louise Haigh quits over phone admission | | This morning Keir Starmer has seen his first cabinet resignation since winning the election, with Transport Secretary Louise Haigh stepping down. It comes after details emerged last night that she pleaded guilty to a criminal offence related to incorrectly telling police that a work mobile phone was stolen in 2013.
