| | Stuart Duggan 31 July 2023 | | Good morning. We start the week focusing on energy with Rishi Sunak in Scotland and expected to make an announcement that will affect business and environmental policy. Image: North Sea Midstream Partners Sunak to outline energy plan as green debates continue The prime minister is in the north east of Scotland today to emphasise the role the region will play in the UK's energy security plans. Rishi Sunak is expected to announce funding for the Acorn Project in St Fergus, Aberdeenshire - a new fossil fuels scheme that involves carbon capture , a technique that sees greenhouse gases being stored, rather than released into the atmosphere. The government says the project will create jobs and reduce the UK’s reliance on other countries for energy. But climate campaigners say carbon capture is a greenwashing tactic designed to keep the fossil fuel industry in business. The expected announcement comes amid political debates over green issues such as the UK's 2050 net-zero target, low-traffic neighbourhoods and London's ultra-low emission zone (Ulez). | | | | | | | | | | |
stamping it out If you've got some old stamps in the back of a drawer somewhere, today is the last day you can use them. From tomorrow, if you use old ones, the person receiving your letter or parcel could have to pay an extra charge. Royal Mail will still let you swap your old stamps for new ones though, and there are some other things to know about special Christmas and commemorative stamps. Get all the details here. | | | | | Woman stuck in hospital for 11 months in carer wait Next we've got a BBC investigation into care support, with some elderly people having to wait for months or even years. Lily, who's 96, was stuck in hospital for the best part of a year because her local council had difficulty finding carers to support her at home. The UK government said waiting lists were down but there was "more to do". You can find out more about Lily and the other people affected in our full story and in the programme I Want To Go Home which is on TV and on iPlayer.
Etsy 'destroying' sellers by withholding money People who sell items using the online marketplace Etsy say the site is "ruining" their businesses by putting 75% of their takings on hold for 45 days. Owners say they can't afford to buy new materials or pay bills due to the change in policy. Etsy says its payment reserve system is used to "keep the marketplace safe" and to cover any potential refunds.
